Climate change and the oil industry's rhetorical challenge

The IPCC has increasingly pointed to human activities as a reason for the climate changes that can be observed. For several years, it has been focused on the contribution of the oil industry. The industry is regarded as one of the largest polluters in the world, and hence it needs to explain itself. In this article, it is discussed how the Norwegian oil industry has responded to this rhetorical situation, and how it attempts to strengthen its legitimacy and its reputation. The article shows how the rhetorical situation of the oil companies forms certain constraints, but that it is also affords the companies some opportunities, for instance in the form of a strategic definition of the concept of sustainable development.
