TV duels between top politicians in election campaigns help voters make informed decisions. Participation in duels makes
it possible for politicians to influence the future parliament, thereby affecting policy decisions and future opportunities for cooperation. It therefore is of importance, how duelists are constructed as individuals, as politicians and as leaders, with respect to experience, competencies and personality. This article is a conversation analytic study of the TV host's initial co-creation of the credibility platform that duelists get in the debate. The data are two duels between Danish top politicians. The first is between Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Helle Thorning-Schmidt in the general election 2007. The other is between Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and Anders
Fogh Rasmussen in the general election 2001. In focus are the first
few minutes of the opening of the duels. The article shows how
different duelist was treated, how much is being established in the
first few minutes, and how very different conditions, a specific
male and a specific female party leader were offered in a verbal
skirmish in front of a nation-wide audience.
