Abstract

In this paper we examine how cultural authority is unfolded when examples are being used. What it means to hold
authority – to speak words of power, to be heard and followed – will differ from situation to situation. We assume that the active
and productive stock of established examples of any a society or genre, are cultural sources to authority. But how do you benefit
from them? How do you step forth as their rightful owner? In this paper we discuss three very different utterances, partly by
examining the situations for each of them and partly by considering their immediate historical contexts. The utterances are
taken from different historical periods and they represent different genres and forms of expressions. More significant in this study are
