What functions do narratives carry out in rhetorical texts and how may the use of narrative devices in rhetorical discourses be analyzed? As the roles played by narratives in contemporary communication continue to widen these two questions appear pressing, however a large divide exists between the over representation of narratives in public discourse and the under representation of such matters in new rhetorical critique. This article aims at bridging parts of that divide. Through readings of classical and modern approaches, the article argues that, first, existing takes on the matter suffer from lack of precise notions of both the what and the why of the rhetorical narrative and, secondly, suggests distinguishing between narrative and narrativity as well as between narratio, example and master plot. The suggested approach is then brought to bear on the speech given at Ronald Reagan during the ceremony for the astronauts after the space shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986.
