Abstract

The article investigates speechwriting in contemporary rhetorical criticism as well as ancient sources, the latter with a particular focus on the concept of dramatic character: ethopoeia. The investigation has two perspectives: in the first, the speech is viewed as a tailored dress made to fit the speaker, in the other the speech is thought to express the individuality and personality of the speaker. Especially the latter seems to be dominant in the practice and theory of contemporary speechwriting. The article concludes that a third perspective, allowing for a more dynamic and constitutive conceptualization of speech writing, is needed.
