Hvilke funktioner tjener fortællinger i retoriske tekster, og hvordan analyserer man brug af fortællinger og fortællende elementer i retorisk diskurs? De to spørgsmål er blevet mere påtrængende i takt med, at fortællinger spiller stadigt større roller i mange forskellige typer af senmoderne kommunikation. Der består imidlertid et misforhold mellem fortællingers overrepræsentation i offentligheden og deres underrepræsentation i retorisk kritik, et misforhold, som artiklen tager skridt mod udbedringen af. Via nedslag i dels klassisk retorik, dels moderne retorik argumenterer artiklen for, at traditionelle retoriske tilgange til fortællingens former og funktioner mangler sikre greb om begge dele. Sådanne greb søges derefter udviklet i form af en tidssvarende bestemmelse og afgrænsning af, hvad og hvor fortællinger er i retoriske tekster. Det sker via en skelnen mellem fortælling og narrativitet samt via en skelnen mellem fortælling som narration, som eksempel og som masterplot. Disse greb bringes herefter i anvendelse i en analyse af brugen af fortællinger i Ronald Reagans tale ved mindehøjtideligheden for astronauterne fra rumfærgen Challengers forlis i 1986.
