Abstract

In this article the prominence given to linguistic expressions: speech and writing in the western tradition of rhetorical studies is questioned. In particular it is asked whether this tendency has come to obscure alternative forms of communicating agency, such as for example through the strategic use of silence. The author argues that the tendency to give priority to what may seem as more noticeable communicative cues, can be explained as part of a larger complex of theoretical perspectives and selective use of data. Through the use of linguistic and social-anthropological material gathered in the Polynesian part of the Pacific, the atoll society of Tokelau, it is shown how a social-anthropological comparative perspective can help shed light on lacunae in western thinking about communicative practices.
