Får talekunsten altfor mye oppmerksomhet i samfunnet? Blir det for mye snakk og for lite handling? Dette er helt sentrale temaer i Thomas Sprats History of the Royal Society, som ble utgitt bare få år etter at det engelske vitenskapsakademiet ble opprettet i London. I boken sår forfatteren tvil om retorikkens sentrale rolle, samtidig som han hyller framveksten av nye vitenskaper og teknologier. Han formidler også Royal Societys strenge krav til språket: Figurative uttrykksformer blir bannlyst, og den entydigheten som man finner i matematikken, framholdes som et ideal. Tar Sprat dermed et endelig oppgjør med den ciceronianske retorikken, slik det ofte har blitt framstilt i retorikkhistoriske verker? Nå som det engelske vitenskapsakademiet gjør seg klar til å feire sitt 350-års-jubileum, er det på tide å åpne for nye perspektiver. Står Sprats History heller for en kreativ fornyelse av tradisjonen? Fortjener Sprat å bli betraktet som retorikkens redningsmann?
