Metaformetaforen og selvanalogien
Richard Rorty om retorikk og kulturell endring

I retorikken tar man gjerne for gitt at ett viktig formål med faget er å understøtte kulturell endring. Imidlertid er det påfallende hvor lite vi har klart å drive det til på dette området. Jeg tar derfor til orde for at retorikkfaget bør fatte større interesse for Richard Rorty, som ikke bare har en åpenbar vitenskapsteoretisk affinitet til retorikken, men som også har en velutviklet teori om kulturell endring. Jeg stiller først inn på Rortys metaformetafor, som insisterer på at endring er noe rart, abnormt, og strengt tatt meningsløst. Metaformetaforen utfordrer noen av retorikkens ideer om handlekraft og kontroll, og dét på en produktiv måte, men til syvende og sist vil jeg hevde at den ikke lar seg opprettholde. Retorikken har mer å hente fra Rortys selvanalogi, der endring skjer gradvis, gjennom sammenstilling, sammenligning og utligning av forskjeller mellom oss selv og andre.
