Nu växer forskningsfältet environmental humanities. Mänsklighetens stora utmaningar när det gäller miljön kan inte lösas enbart med naturvetenskap och teknik. Humanistiska och kommunikativa perspektiv har visat sig fruktbara för förståelsen av varför människor väljer som de gör och vilka förutsättningar som krävs för förändring. Förvånansvärt lite retorikforskning handlar dock om hållbarhetsfrågor trots att retoriska begreppsapparater och synsätt har potential att ge viktiga bidrag. Den här översiktsartikeln handlar om vad fältet hållbarhetsretorik skulle kunna vara och bidra med. Den sammanfattar fältets historik, kartlägger forskningsfronten och lyfter fram tre exempel på särskilt intressanta teman. Dessutom diskuterar den ett förhållningssätt till relationen mellan forskning, utbildning och medborgarskap.
